Case Study

A multicloud approach for the future of energy

The strategic transition to a scalable and resilient multicloud infrastructure, integrating AWS and Oracle OCI to optimize performance and operational efficiency.

The challenge

Overcoming the limitations of a centralized cloud infrastructure by adopting a more efficient multicloud model.

SCENARIO

The evolution of the cloud between efficiency and flexibility

One of the leading companies in the European utility sector has overcome the traditional IT model based on on-premise data centers and outsourced management, adopting a completely cloud-based architecture. This paradigm shift has redefined IT operations, which today govern the entire application ecosystem: from core processes, such as measurement, billing and customer engagement, to non-core systems for managing thermal power plants, wind and solar farms, accounting, HR and real estate applications. The company had already started migrating to the cloud, relying on AWS to progressively move all IT services. Recently, it has taken a further strategic step embracing multicloud: a model that integrates multiple providers to maximize economic efficiency, performance and range of available services, ensuring a more flexible, scalable and resilient infrastructure.

The solution

A multicloud infrastructure for optimal performance

To support its modernization strategy, the company has adopted a multicloud infrastructure that integrates AWS and Oracle OCI, ensuring greater flexibility, operational efficiency and cost optimization. Migrating databases to OCI was a crucial step, allowing us to make the most of OCI's performance, security, and reliability capabilities. Technology Reply guided this process, designing and implementing a migration path that reduced operational interruptions to a minimum, thanks to the adoption of cloud-native tools and specific best practices for enterprise environments. The new multicloud ecosystem ensures a resilient and scalable infrastructure, capable of supporting both mission-critical applications and the future evolution of its IT operations.

How did we do it

A strategic migration without operational impacts

To ensure a smooth transition without significant impacts on business operations, Technology Reply has adopted a structured approach to migration. The backend transfer included the transfer of EBS-based applications, ODIs, and Oracle databases, using the Oracle Base Database Service solution on OCI. The integration with AWS has made it possible to maintain an efficient and balanced multicloud environment, ensuring business continuity and performance optimization. The main steps of the project:

Workload planning
and analysis

Identifying critical applications and databases to establish migration priorities.

Transferring the backend layer

Migrating applications and databases to OCI, taking advantage of the advanced capabilities of Oracle PaaS.

Optimizing performance

Architecture review to improve efficiency and integration between the two cloud environments.

Reducing operational impact

Implementation of a progressive migration plan to minimize downtime, even for databases larger than 40 TB.

Adopting a cloud-native architecture

Using Oracle Data Guard to ensure high availability, reliability, and resilience of the infrastructure.

Simplifying IT Management

Integration with OCI's native monitoring and automation tools to improve governance and control of resources.

The benefits

Maximum integration between cloud and business operations

The adoption of a multicloud infrastructure has allowed the leader in the utilities and energy sector to achieve more agile, resilient and efficient IT management, optimizing the interaction between AWS and Oracle OCI. This new operating model, developed on multiple streams, involved six countries (Italy, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil), managing 15 applications and 73 Oracle databases (versions 12c and 19c). Thanks to this transformation, the company was able to benefit from:

Optimization
of costs

Average reduction of 50% thanks to a more efficient management of OCPU licensing and an intelligent distribution of resources between the two cloud providers.

Unconstrained
scalability

The multicloud model allows IT capacity to be dynamically adapted according to business needs, facilitating expansion into new markets and the evolution of services.

Maximum operational
flexibility

The ability to combine the best AWS and OCI (Generative AI) technologies allows you to choose the most suitable solution for each specific workload, optimizing performance and reliability.
