From energy operators to aggregators of energy flexibility

In the context of the transition to a more sustainable energy system, the increasing adoption of renewable sources poses new challenges, such as managing intermittency and the unpredictability of production. Unlike traditional power plants, these sources require new solutions to ensure energy flexibility — that is, balancing supply and demand, reducing the risk of overloading electricity grids, and monitoring grid stability.

In this scenario, a large international energy operator engaged us to develop a customised solution capable of operating on a global scale, aimed at managing energy flexibility programmes in a secure, scalable, and efficient manner. The request involved creating a platform based on IoT and cloud technologies to facilitate participation in Demand Response programmes across different countries.

The solution

Monitoring and aggregating the consumption of energy assets

Sense Reply proposed a solution based on its proprietary RIPA accelerator (Reply IoT Platform Accelerator), which enables the management of the entire cycle of processes necessary to monitor and aggregate the energy consumption of distributed assets — including commercial and industrial sites, telecommunications facilities, data centres, and electric vehicle charging stations — and to create energy flexibility solutions. This solution allows the precise ranking of participants in Demand Response events, continuously monitoring the performance of each asset to ensure adherence to contractual commitments and secure communication with TSOs (Transmission System Operators). Given the need for continuous monitoring of the solution, a system has been implemented to ensure network stability, proactively intervening to maintain high performance and security. Additionally, through the integration of Artificial Intelligence, the platform can accurately predict future consumption, optimising asset selection in real-time for each Demand Response event.
