The goal

Securely unlocking your car digitally - as easy as contactless payment

The scenario

Using your mobile phone as a car key without an app

Many cars can already be unlocked remotely with a smartphone. Until now, users have had to download the respective manufacturer's app and register there. A leading car manufacturer wanted to simplify this process. A solution was needed that did not require a download or login, allowed unlocking vehicles from different manufacturers to increase user flexibility, and still guaranteed maximum security.

The solution

More flexibility thanks to cross-industry standard

Thanks to a solution implemented by Comsysto Reply, the customers of the leading car manufaturer are able to conveniently store their key in their wallet - just like a credit card or a concert ticket. By sending a special link, they can also share the digital key and thus lend their vehicle temporarily or allow friends permanent access without much effort. To achieve this, the experts have realized the digital key concept according to the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) specification. With this concept, the alliance of vehicle OEMs, mobility and technology companies have created a manufacturer-independent standard that replaces brand-specific apps.

How we did it

Proven communication, encryption and authentication methods

A skillful combination of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), ultra-wideband (also known as ultra-wideband, UWB) and Near Field Communication (NFC) ensures reliable and secure communication between the various end devices, the vehicle and the respective servers in the background. On the one hand, these technologies prevent relay attacks in which the signal is amplified in order to unlock and steal the vehicle unnoticed.

On the other hand, they also work even if the smartphone battery is empty, or no internet connection is available. Mutual Transport Layer Security (MTLS) additionally provides encryption of the data transmitted. OAuth2 simultaneously makes sure that only authorised devices can communicate with the specific services and hence successfully access it.

The result

Ready for the car sharing of tomorrow

The experts from Comsysto Reply have not only supported the car manufacturer in the implementation of an advanced digital key but have also equipped its vehicles for new business models. The manufacturer-independent standard of the CCC's digital key opens up new opportunities for both private individuals and fleets. This will make car sharing even more straightforward in future.
