From results to final clinical trial report in a short time

The challenge

From medicinal plants to licensed drugs

For more than 150 years, Dr. Willmar Schwabe has been a pioneer in the development of phytopharmaceuticals. The family-owned company's mission is to harness the healing power of nature for the benefit of mankind. But before a new drug can be sold in pharmacies, it must undergo extensive product development. This includes galenic, analytical and preclinical development, as well as proof of efficacy, safety and tolerability.

The company must therefore carry out extensive tests with its drug and carefully evaluate and document all the results - a lengthy process that follows strict regulatory and scientific guidelines. In particular, writing the final report summarising the entire study is time-consuming and requires the utmost precision.

The solution

An AI boost for writing scientific reports

Go Reply and Sprint Reply develop an AI-supported tool for Dr. Willmar Schwabe that greatly accelerates the creation of clinical study reports. With this tool, scientific staff can easily generate the different sections of the first draft report step by step. The tool accesses and automatically processes study-specific documents and results. In doing so, the tool follows the strict guidelines of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), which regulates the approval of medicines. This means that the basis for a high-quality final report can be produced in the shortest possible time.

The technology behind it

Advanced prompt engineering and Google Cloud technology

The new tool is based on the Google Cloud Platform and the powerful Large Language Model Google Gemini. Pre-defined commands – also known as prompts – provided by the tool allow users to generate the different sections of the study report at the push of a button. These prompts are specifically tailored to the requirements of study reports, in collaboration with Reply's experts, to ensure that the texts generated meet scientific standards.

The AI tool provides employees with valuable support in preparing reports. Thanks to Google DocumentAI, the prompt takes into account exactly the right data from study materials that often exceed 1,000 pages. This quickly produces a first draft of a study report for the medical writer to review and edit.

The result

A better understanding of the potential of AI

Dr. Willmar Schwabe not only benefits from a helpful AI tool that can facilitate the creation of the clinical studies reports. Thanks to the collaboration with Reply’s experts, the company has now also developed a better understanding of the potential of AI and knows how to use it profitably in different areas. Dr. Willmar Schwabe is now well equipped to develop further tools, optimise its internal processes and drive innovation.
