WRB Enforcement

A major Italian telco operator decided to offer the use of its own telephone network to mobile virtual operators (MVNO). The customer IT ecosystem has seen the introduction of a series of systems to offer order management services, billing, provisioning, etc. to manage the wholesale offer. Wholesale Rating & Billing (WRB) is the system responsible for charging the traffic generated by the MVNO SIM and billing to the MVNOs for the use of network resources created by MVNO users. Subsequently the customer expanded its wholesale sales offer by introducing fixed telephony services for its MVNO. Consequently, WRB evolved its capabilities in order to manage this new type of service. Furthermore the system was re-engineered to manage the growing volumes handled by the platform. The new platform is based on a complete custom solution developed by Sytel Reply. WRB manages over 30 million daily traffic events (voice, SMS, MMS, 3G) generated by over 6 million MVNO customer SIM cards.

Challenges

- Customized invoice generation to MVNO accounting system
- Implementation of a retail Bundle offer management capability
- 30+ Millions of traffic events per day to process

Solution

- Master-Slave stateless architectures able to scale horizontally adding new nodes
- Billing and reporting functionalities are spread among database nodes
- Rating activities are performed by database nodes
- Based on Java 11 (Spring Boot), Red Hat Linux Enterprise, Oracle 12c database
