Amazon has become the latest tech firm to show that it remains committed to the UK, as it announced plans for more staff and a programme for apprentices.
The e-retail giant will take on around 5,000 further employees, with the jobs being based at locations around the UK. Among the skilled technology jobs that will be on offer are technician, engineer and software developer positions, with Amazon’s new East London studio for fashion photography, its Edinburgh customer service headquarters and its head office being the main locations.
In its statement confirming the news, Amazon indicated that over 1,500 of these new job vacancies will be created within its London, Edinburgh and Cambridge development hubs. These centres are where work on tech projects such as Prime Video, the Prime Air drone delivery service and the Alexa voice recognition solution is undertaken.
The company’s UK country manager, Doug Gurr, described the new roles as representing the sort of job opportunities normally found at the US tech hotspot Silicon Valley. Indeed, Amazon has also announced that it will be launching a brand new main office later in the year, with the chosen location for this being Shoreditch, which is very close to the UK’s main technology base – Silicon Roundabout.
The news from Amazon comes in the wake of other tech firms, including Apple and Google, investing further in the UK.
