The ARIANE Project

The ARIANE project is one of the distinguished winners of the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) ONE (Open Networks Ecosystem) competition. This high-profile project is dedicated to delivering state-of-the-art solutions aimed at enhancing network intelligence and automation. Its mission is to investigate, validate, and report insights regarding the specific challenges that affect Open Radio Access Network (RAN) standards development and market expansion.

Net Reply is working in a consortium led by the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) to deliver three use cases of rApps and xApps, integrated using a common set of APIs. The consortium consists of industry leaders such as BT, Arquit, VMware, Viavi, Arqit, Amdocs and HCL.

The Challenge

The primary challenge revolves around assessing network performance in a simulated real-world Open RAN deployment.

The project also aims to drive standards advancement, particularly set by the ORAN Alliance, and to push forward product development within the realms of Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC) and software development. Critical problem areas of focus include:

01

Security by Design: Requirements and tests within the multi-vendor, interoperable RAN & RIC subsystem to be around security specification.

02

Conflict Management: Managing and accessing conflicts between concurrently running xAPPs/rAPPs.

03

Interoperability: Common API requirements for northbound interfaces between RICs & apps.

The Solution

As the application (rApps/xApps) partner for the ARIANE project, Net Reply will...

Design and deliver 3 cutting-edge AI/ML-based applications, tailor to address the cruicial areas of energy reduction, advanced traffic steering and dynamic Quality of Service (QoS)

Conduct carrier-grade simulated testing for rAPP/xAPPs use cases across various Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC) platforms as well as testing these use cases under various test conditions.

The consortium partners will be using resources & tools, to investigate, validate, and report insights into the specific challenge areas that are impacting standards development and market development today.

The Results

01

Accelerated O-RAN Adoption: The objective of the activity is to accelerate the adoption of Open RAN for commercial use.

02

Further Support with Standardisation: The outputs will help to stimulate more operator trust in RIC applications for real-world RAN deployments, foster further RIC and application development, and improve standards definition in interface design, API flows and security-by-design.
